Justice printed off a copy of Sonny Burrough’s official postmortem report and took it back to his desk, where he set it in a big pile with all his other research stuff and promptly forgot it existed.

He didn’t care about Sonny. He knew the pimp too well to give a damn about what happened to him. What he cared about was finding the woman who’d left him the stones. Sonny Burroughs was not the fastest avenue to do that.

Justice logged onto his computer and searched the license plate number he’d memorized for the red Honda.

The vehicle was registered to a woman named Brandi Zager of Bowe City. She lived near the community college. Justice wrote her address on a sticky note and slipped it into his pocket.

He’d go pay a visit to this woman later. Maybe he’d been wrong about Annie. Maybe she was an ordinary girl who liked rocks and wanted to have sex with him. Which would mean he’d gotten scared for nothing.

Maybe not nothing. If he was honest with himself, it wasn’t Annie’s possible murderous tendencies that had pushed him away. It was the warmth of her embrace.

Could this Brandi be the one who’d really understand him? The one he could let into his secret life?

The one who had barged in on his secret life without his permission and turned him into a paranoid meerkat. Whoever she was, he wanted to throw her to the ground and make her scream, one way or the other.

His phone buzzed with a text.

Annie. It was like she could always tell when he was thinking about her. Could that be because she was following him?

What if Brandi and Annie were in it together? Sitting back and laughing at him as he ran around like a chicken with its head cut off, looking a total fool.

He read her text. You work for the sheriff’s department, right?

Justice’s fingers moved over the keys, hovering an eighth of an inch above.

What was she playing at?

He kept his reply simple. Yes.

He barely had time to look up before she responded. I’m in the neighborhood. Coffee?

“Coffee?” He reached into his pocket, looking for his worry stone, and instead came up with a handful of rocks. The first was his old worry stone—the purple iolite from Justin that was meant to guide him home. The second stone—pink rhodonite for love. Then a moonstone to represent secrecy, mystery, and protection from darkness and monsters. And finally, pale jade.

What did it mean?

He lined them up neatly on his desk before setting his fingers to the keyboard. He navigated to his favorite online rock catalog and typed those four letters, j-a-d-e.

Healing properties, purity, and good luck.

Yeah right.

Justice glanced at his phone, then back at his computer screen. He hadn’t run a background check on Annie yet or looked up her social media accounts. Not even since he’d started suspecting her.

Annie might be the one he was looking for.

His heart pounded in a way it hadn’t done in years. Like it once did for Justin.
